Bruce, not sure if it's illegal to swerve to miss an animal but it is recommended you don't, been many a case on country roads were people have had bad accidents doing that.
I insisted my son have some professional lesson before I would take him out for some lesson/practice. First time with me I found he was having a bit of trouble with clutch control, he was blaming the the car but I think that in the driving instructors car the driving instructor would have been helping him out with the clutch an brake in the passenger side
