But on housing policy, the government had come up with alternatives to try to address the crisis, including tax breaks on build-to-rent developments.

Housing coalition Everybody's Home said last week the government could fund half a million affordable homes by scrapping tax concessions for property investors, including negative gearing.

The group estimated the government would forego $86.3 billion in tax revenue over the coming decade from negative gearing deductions.

Mr Chalmers said the government would continue to consider further relief to people as it approached the May federal budget.

ok.... so they may be considering changes to negative gearing in the coming budget?

good one @walbrook you have a point after all.

a change in the policy is needed as it presently encourages investment in older houses for investment returns, but the uptake for new built homes is lacking. I would guess restricting the number of older homes one could claim might be a good move, but the need for new home investment being paramount may suggest the removal of older homes from the tax policy.

such a change, imo should go to the election and not be made via budget measures. its a significant strategy that have many types of investors, including many retirees. mucking around with such investments is a dangerous move, some might say a "courageous" move in the Yes PM context.
