Cameron wasn't despised the same way Abbott is. By many stretches he implemented things that you would consider lefty. You see, every good government does a few things for the other side of the political spectrum. Examples include Hawke and Keating, John Howard and also Cameron fits into this club.
Consider:
Established a proper board to oversee some of the substandard and toxic media behaviour that had been plaguing their country.
Gay marriage support.
Threatened countries with aid cuts unless they stopped discrimination against gay people.
Worked to stop tax avoidance.
These are the bones a conservative government can throw the left whilst it goes about it's business.
