Saudi firm to build Australia's PNG refugee camp
Red Sea Housing Services, the Saudi Arabian company that builds modular units typically used as worker camps, has landed a $35m deal to build controversial new camps being used by Australia's government to house refugees in Papua New Guinea.
The firm has signed a contract with Australia's Department of Immigration and Citizenship to build a camp which will house up to 430 tenants, as well as providing related accommodation and amenity facilties with all the required infrastructure and services.
Red Sea Housing Services said the camp at Manus Island Temporary Regional Processing Center at Papua New Guinea's Lobrum Naval Base will be completed within 70 days from last Friday's contract signing date. It will be financed through existing cash flows and bank guarantees.
The camps have become a key issue in Australia's current election campaign following a decision announced by the government last month to move people arriving in the country by boat to a refugee processing centre in Papua New Guinea.
The move has popular support but has faced criticism from human rights groups and legal challenges from people seeking asylum in the country.
