    I'd like to have some reasonable basis to believe that "soft on crime" is a deficiency specific to one side of politics:
    Appears to me to be pretty bi-partisan. It's not a political point of difference, rather it's a wide social trend.

    As for this degraded human: didn't have a criminal record, so perhaps the OP should scold somebody for being "soft on mental illness"?

    I had a couple sharing in my house a little while back: events were to demonstrate that both of them had serious mental deficiencies, only noticeable after extended acquaintance. There is no way to spot a diseased mind prone to violence until manifested by behaviour. In this case it's quite likely the case there was no such manifestation.

    But event like this ghastly as they are in themselves, also have the effect of bringing other types of crazies out.
    So try and stay sane. Or get sane, if you aren't already.
