If we assume the 2.5m refund cheque existed, and I think it probably did,
One mechanism for its production that I can think of , is a large amount of shares put into an off market buyback, where the dividend component of the buyback price was high.
Without checking, there are probably a few buybacks back then, where  15 million bucks worth could have done it.
