Very difficult to see a senate which will pass this measure coming out of the next election.
Certainly not on the polling numbers as they are.
Now as far as those who "don't understand, or don't care", I'm not sure many of those voters will vote for the ALP based on this. It wont be a core issue.
However, the people who will be effected, I think, will vote overwhelmingly against the ALP.
So, it may not be a large percentage of the population, but the ALP risks them solidly going against them, and maybe not actually picking up much extra from the rest. So, maybe that 10% was 60/40 liberal leaning before, if this policy pushes them to 80/20, watch out ALP.
If the ALP strategists start to see this in their research, the cynic in me says, policy will change.
