When I read a few posts suggesting Rudd as the greatest Labor leader, I thought Id stumbled on to the Humour thread.
Fact is, Rudd and Gillard both knocked Whitlam off the pedestal as our worst ever PM. Hard to separate them as to which was more toxic. Rudd was a Dudd during the GFC unleashing Comrade Swan with millions of Harvey Norman cheques going out - even to dead people and people I know who aren't Australian and live overseas. The less said about the pink batts and school lean-to debacles, the better. A legend in his own mind, a man who squandered a surplus, p*ssed it against the wall, unleashed profligacy under Swan and spiralled us into massive debt. In short, a disaster.
The best federal Labor leaders in my time - Hawke, Keating and Kim Beazley.
The worst - Rudd, Gillard, Shorten, Gough, Latham.
