Seems a genuinely decent bloke and that he's telling the truth about the reason.
Yeah, it's sudden and he should stay on until the next election, but I remember having two young kids and not being able to take the business trips as I felt I wasn't being the dad I wanted to be. And there may be some health or personal issue too at home that isn't being discussed, which makes him feel he's needed there immediately.
