I am not a smoker as well, but my smoking friends sadly still smoke, except one.

He had tongue cancer and 5 years later still surviving with problems.

They at first removed his wisdom teeth so they could through the side of his cheek shoot radiation at his tongue .

Then they removed his bottom jaw to be able to surgically remove most of his tongue.

They then took a large skin graft of his leg in an attempt to make another tongue. It didn't take and had to remove it.

The skin graft from leg was so large they couldn't close it.
So they took a small skin graft from arm then closed both areas.

He was on fluids for over a year going by memory, and during that time had thrust in his mouth.

His wife was an Angel who prepared him meals as thick shakes. Gave massages to his skeleton body.

He is on solids now and doing reasonably well considering what he went through.

The radiating has weaken his remaining teeth and they crumble. I asked his wife why don't they put stronger false teeth in?

Her reply was they would rather lose teeth when biting on something hard then break jaw. Made sense.

The Doctor told him he shouldn't have smoked and drink.

    I thought about that statement.

I believe the Alcohol washes protective saliva away in mouth, throat and tongue to let killer chemicals into your system.

    Prevention is better than cure.

I had a father of a friend who died with throat cancer at a young age.

They can't cut throat cancer out and have you survive.

    cheers,
