Mother always taught me if you haven't got anything nice to say then do not say anything at all.

'The Government's got to also understand, we don't have the scientific or technical capacity to actually embrace nuclear power even if it was economical'

Now that statement is a vote winner.....

    Labor rejects nuclear
Federal Labor remains opposed to nuclear power generation, and is sceptical about any suggestion that Australia could quadruple the value of its uranium exports by enriching uranium oxide before it's sent overseas.

The Opposition says Australia doesn't have to make the nuclear decision because when it comes to energy reserves, Australia is better off than most other countries.

Labor's Resources spokesman, Martin Ferguson, says nuclear power does not stack up.

Mr Ferguson, who supports more uranium mining in Australia and wants to change Labor's no-new-mines policy, warned Mr Howard his political manoeuvre could backfire.

'The Government's got to also understand, we don't have the scientific or technical capacity to actually embrace nuclear power even if it was economical,' he said.

However, Mr Ferguson says any serious attempt to address rising greenhouse gas emissions starts with ratifying the Kyoto protocol on climate change.
