Received email from SMM today stating Bill Ludwig, AWA leader,declared last night he had the numbers to overturn the party's "no new uranium mines" policy, despite party apparatchiks in two states moving to silence debate on australia's role in the nuclear power industry. The influential president of Aust.Workers Union said the numbers suggested there may not need to be a vote on the matter at national conference. The NSW branch of the AWU has come under pressure to withdraw a motion from the NSW Labor conference tmorrow calling for an investigation of the viability of nuclear power.
