    this is another important paragraph;

    'With the exception of Gough Whitlam, Davidson says people who get elected "tend to be reasonably similar in their outlook and what they are doing". His view of the 1970s recession was that it was caused by the oil price crisis which was then exacerbated by the government reacting badly.'

    the clicher is this; "exacerbated by the government reacting badly", you can't always control outside influences but you can react to them properly.

    our current government can't control the global financial crisis & it's making things worse with some extraordinarily poor decisions, but they're ahead in the polls so everything must be o.k......right?
