    guess the ABS was wrong

    The ABS estimates aren't wrong as such because the figure of how many longer term people arrived doesn't account for the over 70,000 who left during the period.
    The net overseas migration figure is much lower but still higher than some people are comfortable with.

    Interestingly the ABS also do a net zero migration forecast and under such guesses in 10 years Australians would see a movement Japanification.
    Australia's population would have a higher average age because the average age of acceptable migrants is quite low.
    That's why we are a migrant country which both sides support when they are in power.
