Is there a possibility that it is all part of the show?

Brumby has been there as a teacher and can sympathise with life as a public servant. If he has a history of being a union supporter, union officials would be well aware of this and use it as leverage.

Brumby has to play the part of the Premier for all to see so he does not look weak or create scepticism in the eyes of the voting public.

I think this type of role playing falls under the umbrella of playing politics.

Just my thoughts.
