The Labor-NTEU scare campaign on university fees is in tatters following submissions to the Senate Education and Employment Legislation Committee showing fees at one of Australia’s top universities will be $16,000 a year across all undergraduate courses.
Minister for Education the Hon Christopher Pyne MP said students have been profoundly misled by Labor, the NTEU and the Greens in reckless scaremongering about universities fees.
The University of Western Australia, one of four Australian Universities in the world’s top 100* has stated in its submission to the Senate Committee on the higher education reform package that under the reforms, fees for all their undergraduate degrees would be set at $16,000 a year.
“Labor and the NTEU claim university fees will increase to more than $32,000 a year. The University of Western Australia has set fees at half of that figure, exposing Labor’s shameless scare campaign,” Mr Pyne said.
This means the maximum any student under the new regime would pay for a three year degree is $48,000, an amount substantially lower than the university currently charges international students.
“As is currently the case, students will not have to pay a cent up front, able to borrow the entire cost of their degree from the taxpayer and only repay it when they are earning over $50,000 a year,” Mr Pyne said.
Meanwhile the Council for Private Higher Education (COPHE) has indicated that some students will pay less under the reforms, stating “whatever they receive in Commonwealth support for students will be passed to students through reduced tuition and some private providers are planning to hold fees at 2014 levels through 2016”.
Mr Pyne said Labor, the NTEU and their fellow travellers in the Greens have engaged in a disgraceful attempt to frighten students and families.
