HDR geothermal is powered by a much greater nuclear reactor than all the uranium that will ever be mined by man. Also nicely, the reactor and it's waste are predisposed of deep in the earth.
As a result of the scale of this "natural nuclear reactor" if the technology for HDR becomes economic then it will make manmade nuclear reactors look like chicken feed. Perhaps in 50 years both nuclear and geothermal will both be widely used, perhaps neither?
The USA may be less than 1% (conventional) geothermal (but the less we followed america the better the world might be). However as well as NZ (approx 10%) and Iceland mentioned by others, also Philippines, Indonesia, Kenya and several central American countries rely on conventional geothermal for a substantial portion of their power. Quite a bit in Italy and Japan.
