LEFT DIGS IN ON URANIUM
Labor’s left wing has revived memories of the Chernobyl disaster to warn it will fight any attempt to ease party policy on uranium mining.
Opposition environment spokesman Anthony Albanese yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the world’s worst nuclear disaster by slamming the Howard government’s nuclear policy in a speech to the Sydney University Labor Club.
Mr Albanese, a key member of the Left, used the 2006 HV Evatt Annual Lecture to pledge his support for Labor policy, which allows mining at only three existing uranium mines.
He also criticised those, including some senior colleagues, who had suggested change.
Meanwhile, anti-nuclear campaigners protested outside the Sydney AGM of Australian uranium miner Energy Resources Australia (ERA), criticising its scheduling on the Chernobyl anniversary.
