The title of this thread should have been:

Lies, damned lies and statistics.

Dear nine lives - I believe your logic is clearly flawed. Anyone who has studied statistics knows that proportions are just as meaningful and often moreso than numbers, especially when one is comparing completely different types of data and attempting to correlate it all.

It is indeed quite ironic that you commented:

"... I have to wonder how much of the concern on these threads is proportional and how much is hysteria. I tend to think 5% proportional genuine concern and 95% hysteria and hatred."

So therefore, how about continuing in that vein? I'd like to know the proportions of:

- ladders etc to deaths.
- cars to deaths
- humans to suicides
- terrorists to terror-related deaths
etc
etc

That would give us a better idea of the concern.

Also, you need to consider many other factors in order to end up with a conclusion - such as:

- the proportional increase in object versus deaths year on year
- in this argument, the willingness of the object to commit deaths i.e. what is the purpose of each object versus the proportion of deaths caused?
- etc
- etc

Please come back with more data.
