I flew over Lake Eyre when it was full in 1989. It that year Lake Torrens was also full for the first time in 150 years. An interesting thing about Lake Eyre at that time was a large patch of clear water, very roughly in the centre of the lake. I have often wondered of this was artesian water, as there are mound springs in the area surrounding the lake.
Also, I understand that there have been proposals in the past to divert water from the eastern rivers in to Lake Eyre. Could there ever be enough water available to fill the lake and overcome the high evaporation rate? Now for a hypothetical; would there ever be enough water through river diversions and an increase in rainfall, to allow the level of Lake Eyre to rise enough to flow to the sea through Lake Torrens, elevation about 160'?
