Lambie threatens to sue Aboriginal elder

A FIERY Jacqui Lambie has threatened legal action after an Aboriginal elder lashed out at the senator for identifying as an indigenous woman without consulting the Tasmanian community or providing “evidence”.
One week after the Palmer United Party senator revealed her Aboriginality in her first speech to parliament, the head of the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania, Clyde Mansell, said Senator Lambie had no right to claim she was indigenous.
Senator Lambie has fought back by producing a family tree that links her to Tasmanian chief Mannalargenna through one of his granddaughters, Margaret Briggs.
A 2002 Administrative Appeals Tribunal acknowledged that Ms Briggs was an Aboriginal woman who married a white man, Thomas Hite.
Mr Mansell, a descendant of Mannalargenna, said if this connection was “tested” among the Aboriginal community it would prove false.
“Jacqui Lambie has stood up in the national parliament in her maiden speech and said that she’s Aboriginal,” Mr Mansell said.
“It seems to me there was a readiness to accept that claim.
“At some stage these claims have got to be tested and verified by the very community that she claims to be a part of.”
