I have a sketchy memory of China banning the mega iron ore carriers of Vale (the Brazilian iron ore company), saying the Chinese ports couldn't handle them. Then later buying those ships at a knock-down price. Have they since deepened their ports? Similarly, I thought they contracted with Russia to build 100(?) fighter jets in China. Then after seeing how 10, or so, were built, they cancelled the contract. Telling the Russian company, that they, the Chinese, could now build the rest themselves. [Sorry, I really don't know any certain details.] I think these things happened about 10 years ago. My limited experience is that the Chinese are "ruthless" business people. Maybe, only the Americans are on a similar level of "win at all costs". I'm pleased to see that Lynas is going full steam ahead with the Kalgoorlie processing plant. And I think the US last-step processing also needs a hurry-up.
