The Lancashire Waste Partnership PFI Project
An opportunity to showcase Australian innovation
The Lancashire Waste Partnership PFI Project is one of the largest municipal waste management undertakings in the United Kingdom. It involves all of the fifteen Local Authorities in Lancashire, which together have developed A Greener Strategy for a Greener Future, underpinned by the Lancashire PFI project. The Strategy provides the context for the delivery of both waste disposal and collection services and the implementation of national and European waste minimisation, recycling and landfill reduction directives.
In response to an invitation from the Lancashire County Council, Global Renewables has submitted a unique proposal to process some 20 million tonnes of waste over 25 years (up to approximately 865,000 tonnes per annum). This will enable the Lancashire region to position itself as one of the world's leaders in sustainable waste management, based on Australian technological innovation.
The Global Renewables response presents state of the art, proven technology, and is supported by a comprehensive suite of commercial, environmental engineering and waste management capabilities.
The waste management facilities proposed are a combination of waste transfer, recycling, composting and mechanical biological treatment at seven sites throughout the Lancashire area, with a capital investment of around A$600 million. The services, which are scheduled to commence in 2008 following a four year construction period, will create more than 550 new jobs.
Global Renewables is one of two companies short-listed. If successful, this project will consolidate the company's position as one of the key providers of integrated waste management facilities in the United Kingdom waste market and will open opportunities for the further developments in Europe.
