I've owned my own house(s) for a long time, but remember times of renting from petty, mean-minded landlords, who didn't stoop to list jam jars as 'glasses' and had us sign a list of such 'precious' items as a guarantee, that we wouldn't destroy or steal them. Another one (upstanding minister in some church) rented us a flea- and rat-infested house, which we eventually cleaned up - similar in the old 'Glebe' of Sydney - impossible living conditions, just a copper for your wash, no bath, toilet out the back - no, thanks, I would not wish to be a land'lord'!
Another, rich, lady'friend' who had bludged off my relatives in Switzerland when visiting there . . . . but better not go there. . . went into the rental business and at one stage asked me if an upturned bucket with a doily over it could pass for a side-table to beds - I was lost for words, she has passed into history very quickly, is probably filthy rich now.
Being landlord, tenant, is fraught with human frailties on both sides, and the sooner rents, etc, are government regulated and government steps in and builds cheap and reasonable housing, the better, unless we want to see the predatory behaviour of landlords with the resulting homeless people forever, a disgusting situation for an 'advanced' civilisation.
