Hemispherx Says Studies Show Two of Its Drugs May Help Fight Bird Flu


PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Drug developer Hemispherx Biopharma Inc. said Thursday that two of its drugs show potential in fighting the bird flu strain H5N1.
Hemispherx shares rose 33 cents, or 12 percent, to $2.99 in morning trading on the American Stock Exchange.


Lab studies showed that Ampligen not only boosted antibody levels around the nose and mouth, where the bird flu invades, by up to sixfold, but boosted the effectiveness of flu remedies Tamiflu and Relenza, allowing the same protection but with 50 to 100 times less the dose of the remedies.

Another study showed that genital wart treatment Alferon could be used to stimulate antivirus immunity genes to allow the body to increase its potential to combat diseases like bird flu.

Hemispherx Biopharma plans to file a new drug application for Ampligen with the Food and Drug Administration to treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome later this year. Alferon N Injection is already FDA-approved, but the company plans to file additional marketing applications for the drug.
