Ease up Posters - Bambi has not been shot, and the sky will not fall in overnight. What is it with HC Posters shooting the messenger?
Chemist1959 was merely pointing out an article that indicated some EV manufacturers were considering an electric motor that does not use rare earths.
China dominates RE production, and is not afraid to use that power to control production or even to withhold supply (e.g., during the trawler dispute with Japan). Is it surprising that non-Chinese users of RE would look at alternatives? Further, why can't Chemist1959 muse over other issues such as sustainability? REs are not so rare, but extracting them is costly and environmentally unfriendly.
Anyway, one size does not fit all, and both RE and non-RE will share the market (until something else happens). Other applications will take up what EVs don't.
Apart from a couple of errors in understanding electric motors (and I would make them with battery chemical equations), I cannot see anything wrong with what Chemical1959 has written.
