Just to add some perspective on the scale of large open cut mines, the 10 deepest open cut mines in the world are deeper (or will be deeper) than 500m, which is over 7 times deeper than the currently proposed Natougou open pit.
The deepest mine in the world is the Bingham Canyon mine located south-west of Salt Lake City and is more than 1.2km deep and approximately four kilometres wide.
