China’s cobalt metal price leaps amid thin trade; cobalt salts lead price hike on strong demand
The price of cobalt metal in China jumped further on Wednesday February 22, as import costs rose despite sparse trade this week.
China’s cobalt metal price climbed to 410,000-420,000 yuan per tonne ($59,568-61,022 per tonne, about $27.01-27.68 per lb) after today’s pricing assessment. This is a rise of 12.5% on last Friday’s assessment, the highest increase recorded in recent years. The Metal Bulletin-assessed low-grade cobalt price jumped by more than one dollar per lb to $19.90-20.90 per lb on February 17, and the high-grade cobalt price surged by 6.8% to $20.75-21.40 per lb. Low-grade cobalt prices climbed by almost 40% so far this year and both high-grade and low-grade numbers are up by more than 80% from a year earlier. Tight supply and investor interest drove the prices up, and it is believed they could support price rallies in the future. "Unlike the price rally in 2007-08, the price surge this year is supported by positive fundamentals," an international cobalt trader said.
