It's never been pretty there and there has hardly been a year without violence and refugees. The biggest issue currently is in the Kasai region and its surroundings due to the Nsapu militia rebellion. It's mostly ethnic in nature with the militias made up of Luba people attacking non-Luba. There is also a tribal element in this where a leader was not appointed by the current regime, then called for an insurrection and was later killed, sparking off the violence.
Violence has been ongoing in the DRC every year for many years now. Endless rebellions and fighting. A lot of unrest near Katanga comes from the ethnic spill over from the Rwandan genocide in the Kiva region in particular. Hardly surprising when the ethnic makeup pi graph looks like a chopped up birthday cake and with five official languages spoken.
Anyhow, really nothing new. Hopefully, the concrete date for elections at the end of 2018 are sufficient to keep the relative peace that is the DRC.
