The Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE) experienced its largest daily transaction volumes on record for the SFE 30 day interbank cash rate futures contracts last week, figures have shown.
SFE Corporation Ltd said the total volume last Friday was 12,643 contracts, an eight per cent increase on the previous daily record of 11,665 contracts set on August 4, 2004.
It said open interest in the contract was currently at 55,351 contracts.
It said a large proportion of the record volume occurred in the December 2004 contract month, reflecting growing market expectations of an interest rate change at the end of the year. advertisement

"The SFE Target Rate Tracker, which provides a measure of market expectation for a rate change, is currently showing very little likelihood of a change during October and November due to the timing of the federal election," SFE general manager of business development Peter Hiom said.
The federal election will be held on October 9.
"We are seeing the majority of the trading activity in the December 2004 and early 2005 contract months, in the post election period," he said.
"The SFE Target Rate Tracker is showing a market expectation of a rate change in the order of 10 per cent in December 2004 and 17 per cent in February 2005."
