KUANTAN: LYNAS Corporation Ltd (LYNAS) will try to recycle residue from the residual water leach purification (WLP) at its plant in Gebeng industrial estate here, over the next five years.

That is one of the steps taken by the company before the plant disposes of waste containing natural radioactive material (NORM) completed in Australia.

Its chief executive officer, Amanda Lacaze, said it would ensure that all residues were managed within that period before the first phase of the plant's transfer took place.

"We have done various research and development (R & D) involving WLP and we have successfully produced the basic materials of the road and the trimmer products known as CondiSoil from this residue.

"All R & D is done through surveillance from various relevant authorities and we have been confirmed several times to operate here," he said.

He was speaking to the media when met at the LYNAS organized by the LYNAS Advance Material Plant (LAMP) plant site here yesterday.

Also present was Beserah State Assemblyman (ADUN) Andansura Wednesday.

Lacaze said that if the recycling plan fails, LYNAS will build a permanent disposal facility (PDF) to manage the residue.

"The state government has agreed to approve an area in the state to build PDFs but we are not informed in which area," he said.

Asked on the hearing of the appeal that will take place on Friday, Lacaze said he was confident his destiny was in favor of them as Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had informed LYNAS would be allowed to continue operating in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, when asked to comment on the action of the Semambu Assemblyman, Lee Chean Chung lodged a report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday, Lacaze said it was immune to such a situation since LYNAS commenced operations.

"Such reports are common to us since LYNAS operates in Gebeng about eight years ago, while we have been examined by various agencies like the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB).

"In addition, we have provided environmental impact reports before being allowed to operate, I do not know what their problem is until they continue to protest against the plant," he said.

Commenting on LYNAS's plan to move its operations gradually to Australia, Lacaze said the decision would not affect LYNAS's commitment in providing job opportunities as well as contributing to Malaysia's economic development.

"We will continue to maintain our commitment to our employees and invest in Malaysia so that we can continue to provide employment opportunities to the people in this country," he said.

LYNAS Malaysia's managing director Datuk Mashal Ahmad said in a media statement that it had identified two potential sites to build rare earth processing plants near their mines in Western Australia.
