I'd say that solar (thermal), wave, and geothermal all have the potential for baseload which is what we really need. There is only so much that can be done with unpredictable things like wind.
My money (literally) is on wave and geothermal to get the lionshare of govt funding for that reason.
"Clean coal" (ahem!)will likely get some lollies because the govt is addicted to the revenue stream. A less cynical person may say that because other countries (and parts of this country) are hell bent on burning coal, it its is sensible to make it as "green" as possible. I think that is a sensible approach but it must be realised that is is only a temporary measure while renewables become increasing efficient (ie can compete without assistance).
