Those overstaying their visas are no longer apprehended and placed in detention. Instead they are invited in to the department for a chat over a coffee.
The relaxing of laws has been across the board.
I guess the repulsiveness of folk entering this country via deceptive and illegal means and via the use of smugglers (most hated by Rudd) is worthy of debate. Especially the conundrum created by his/our kindness which has put the smugglers back in business, seen hundreds soon to be thousands risk their lives (some already lost) and many more end up imprisoned anyway as they are caught trying to make it to Kevin's/our safe haven.
Labor too have along the way attempted to use many various reasons as to why the number of boat folk has increased form a near zero figure including blaming the Libs for advertising the fact, seasonal influences, GFC, growing unrest and so on all the time refusing to aknowledge that their policy is the driving force behind the surge.
It's a good debate to have but new policies devoted those who overstay their visas deserve equal scrutiny.
