laterite vs sulphide

    There seems to be some confusion about laterite and sulphide. Sulphur is an element and the Sulphide is an ion of Sulphur so Nickel Sulphide (NiS) contains Nickel and Sulphur elements in a compound.

    When people talk about Nickel Laterite they are not talking about a compound made of two elements, they are talking about a soil structure described as 'lateritic', that has some Nickel included in it in some form or other. There may well be a whole lot of other elements and compounds making up the mix. Perhaps some geologists or geology enthusiasts can clarify this for us?
