Having scared the pants off anyone from going near bitcoin, - by association, - the journo then refers to MEJ in the last part.
An ordinary reader not at all familiar with bitcoin would associate the two people.
Its a good example of the power of the media to focus attention where they want it. There is nothing in the article that anyone could point out as being wrong, but its a mixture of old bad news, crookery, and a new venture.
Very sad and misleading, but that's our media today.
