Hitachi to double nuclear-plant business by '21

TOKYO--Hitachi Ltd. aims to more than double annual sales of its nuclear power plants in the next nine years by cashing in on an expected rise in worldwide demand for the energy, the company said Thursday.

The Japanese plant maker has set a sales target of Y360 million in the financial year ending March 2021 compared with Y160 million in the year ended this past March, a company spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires by telephone.

Of the Y360 million, it expects roughly half will come from overseas versus very little at the end of last fiscal year, he added.

Hitachi is in partnership with General Electric Co. GE +1.81% . The Japan-U.S. joint venture Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy signed in December a preliminary agreement with the Lithuanian government to build a nuclear plant there.

Vietnam, Finland and Poland are prospective clients as are India and countries in the Middle East, the spokesman said.
