A local radio station that I listen to has a newsreader who regularly uses the following during the read "and in sport, Team A will verse Team B on Saturday at ground X". When I questioned the use of the word 'verse' I was given a reference to the radio franchise guidelines that essentially endorsed the use of 'common language' as opposed to the correct usage of the language. Seems that when 'young people' see things written as "Team A v Team B" they interpret the v as verse as opposed to versus.
So, not only is our education system in need of a shake up, media need to be a little more responsible and not perpetuate the bad habits.
