Marketing ploy? ARA is partly funded by his foundation..... A tax write-off on a cause that's showcasing his interest in aviation, technology, and the environment, whilst benefitting the community.... doesn't sound so silly to me.
It would be great if state and federal governments took the combined lidar / VNIR concept and applied it for their future damage assessments. The industrial capacity exists, though I haven't seen it specifically requested for a long time.
The airborne research guys do good work, though the IT news article was a bit of a stretch. There were a number of airborne corporate's who surveyed the damage over Kangaroo Island, (and they do have access to more efficient sensors than the article leads on to believe.)
