Diligent, those same unions were there throughout the GFC and Labor's 6 years in office.
For the record, Labor inherited all of that IMF declared profligate middle class welfare embedded in the budget for posterity by a John Howard who assumed windfalls from the mining boom would never end and that a GFC would never happen. Those budget saddle bags were weighed down by unprecedented national commitments to middle class welfare such as unlimited superannuation concession for people who don't even need superannuation.
And don't forget Tony Abbott's great big 2013 Election promise that his would be a government of NO excuses!
