Darryle, denial of a 57:43 2PP polling result, a personal dissatisfaction rate of 61% for Tony Abbott's performance as PM and Morgan Polling's Government Confidence Rating at a record low score of 86 may make you feel better; but it doesn't change that reality. These are AWFUL numbers just 13 months out from an election.
Six months ago Abbott stared down a party room revolt and promised that henceforth he'd listen and provide good government. But since then the 2015 Budget was made of aeroplane jelly as policy backflips continued and Philip Ruddock and Bronwyn Bishop have bitten the dust.
Prior to the latest polls Abbott's TURC did its level best to smear Bill Shorten, his ratings plummeted. Abbott launched his $101b WMDs spendathon in what appeared at the time to almost be a snap election campaign launch. Abbott added to the extra 54 F35 fighter jets he'd already made as a Captain's Call a new surface fleet to go with twice as many submarines as we have now. He flew his entire Cabinet to Adelaide to joyously announce the boost to our warmongering efforts.
But other chooks are coming home to roost; these include a rise in unemployment to 6.3%, record fall in exports despite the $9b spend on trashing the $Aud, a fresh attack on the Coalition's changes to the NBN from overseas, revelations Hockey has only told a small part of the story about tax to justify his war on the poor and Abbott's mismanagement of his promised Referendum to better recognise Aborigines.
It's degenerating from a mess into a catastrophe and it's increasingly apparent to mainstream Australians that the Emperor has no clothes as they stop listening to his latest attempts to rescue himself.
