Think AIM-54 was gotten rid because of old age, and the fact that from memory only 1 in 6 or 7 missiles would have failed on launch if used. They were mainly used for taking down Russian long range bombers by the F-14's primarily as a fleet defence role.

Surprised they are using the Sidewinders. Their range is even less than the AMRAAM isn't it? Hmmm.
