"There are signs the fire in the Pike River coal mine may be starting to go out.
The GAG (Gorniczy Agregat Gasniczy) machine, used to pump inert gas into the mine, had reduced the amount of oxygen, Pike River Chief Peter Whittall told Radio New Zealand.
Flames seen coming from the mine's ventilation shaft had decreased, he said.
The machine has been running for six days."
