Indeed. I am thinking of going caveman diet, even though I am sitting here eating a packet of chips as I speak!
There is a book by Sally Fallon "Nourishing Traditions - The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats" which made so much sense to me. I was expecting something radical, but much of it is really just going back to how our parents used to cook, but explains the reasons why chemically etc. It is fascinating.
I have also just read a book called Sweet Poison which blames fructose for the modern obesity problem (although I should imagine it's not the ONLY factor). It basically says that as caveman, sweet things were hard to come by and quite rare in nature, and very very good for us, packed full of energy; apples, ripe fruit etc.... Because of this, evoloutionary wise we have not developed an 'off button' for sweet things, in fact, we crave more. Fructose is normally delivered in fruit complete with fibre, and fibre would fill you up - try eating 6 apples in a sitting. So fibre was the thing that stopped caveman eating 20 apples in a go. But without the fibre (such as in a fruit juice) we have no full recognistion and eat and drink more. The excess fructose is converted to fat.
