Phosphates
Tunisian output disruption to
keep market firm short-term
While February pricing remains stable, concerns over supply
issues are adding more fuel to traders’ outlooks. The key
issue emerging this week is the DAP/TSP production
shutdown in Tunisia owing to a shortage of phosphate rock at
the site (see Tunisia update).
The wave of government rattling protests in the Middle East
and North Africa has coincidentally focused on some major
fertilizer producing countries. The market remains nervous
over civil unrest in the region that could potentially lead to
disruption in the flow of phosphate rock supplies and other
processed phosphate products among other products. There
are reports that some SSP shipments out of Egypt have been
cancelled as a result of current disturbances in the country.
OCP is said to be scheduling a maintenance turnaround at
the Jorf Lasfar 290-300,000 mt DAP/MAP plant in February
while in Pakistan the sole DAP producer Fauji has been forced
to shut down production because of gas shortage at the Karachi
plant. The unit is set to resume production February 5.
