I wonder if he loaded up on the referendum with more than just rceognition to make sure it was on the nose to half the ALP membership, none of the Greens and a majoirty of the remainders. If it gets nailed to the mast he doesn't have to pander to the hard left nutters in the party on other issues, them being humbled.
He can be free to work on being the political bastard child of Bob and Paul and hailed an ALP icon.
