Hi there, new to this forum but have been watching GGG with a great deal of interest. Just read this from the following link -http://sermitsiaq.gl/politik/article85490.ece?lang=EN

With self rule being introduced to Greenland on 21 June, next week will see the final elections under the country’s home rule status, meaning that the outcome will decide which political path will be taken in self rule’s infancy.

Recent polls seem to indicate a potential political shift, with the country’s current ruling party, Siumut, facing the possibility of losing its parliamentary majority. If this happens it would mean the first time that the premier post was held by a politician from a party other than Siumut since the introduction of home rule in 1979.

Greenland has three other main political parties; Atassut, IA and Demokraati.

IA are the party expected to make the most gains in the election, and possibly end with a majority and chance to form a government, although it would almost certainly be a coalition government, as tends to be the case in Greenlandic politics. However, commentators are not in agreement whether IA gains would come as a result of Demokraati or Siumut losses. Should IA’s gains come at the expense of Demokraati, the political landscape will not necessarily change.

The complex negotiations of finding parliamentary partners could be crucial this year, as even if Siumut gain a majority it will almost certainly have to form a coalition - and both Atassut and Demokraati have stated that they have not ruled out cooperation with IA.

IA, following from Demokraati, says that it will not consider a coalition government with Siumut, regardless of election outcomes, even if it were to be offered the premier post in any coalition proposal.

IA’s refusal to enter into a political cooperation with Siumut puts everything up for play in the election, with other political parties keeping their options open to see who will win a majority and who will form partnerships with whom.

It is likely that IA, despite its criticism of Siumut for holding power by a single majority, may end up in the same position– holding power due to a one candidate majority.

Greenland’s two smaller political parties Kattusseqatigiit and Sorlaat Partiiat are not expected to affect election outcomes.

The elections take place on Tuesday 2 June.
