Agree with your comments Mad Hare.
I have been dealing with the Chinese for close to 30 years. It is not like dealing with Western countries and things can take a lot longer to come to fruition. Chinese state companies are operating in the interest of China - not shareholders which makes their objectives different from regular commercial ventures.
FAR may well be negotiating with a number of companies, and CNOOC will be one of many. Those that think CNOOC is a white knight are probably somewhat naive in their thinking. Good to have them in the picture but would not want it to be a one horse race.
Chinese negotiate extremely well and a lot of patience is required when dealing with them. Something a lot of posters do not have on this forum.
For the record I think management are doing an excellent job in all areas and in particular at a government level, which in Africa is absolutely critical.
