You seemed to have missed the key point. A confidentiality agreement puts the cone of silence on. As explained, these are required by the big firms. Breaching them could be pretty fatal not just for the agreement under negotiation, but to the credibility of the company.
Not revealing your hand in negotiations for strategic reasons, is incidental to this bigger picture.
