Latham was a flawed character and showed it in the final days of his role as Opposition leader. About half a million people in our neighbouring countries died in the Boxing Day tsunami, while Latham was holed up in a Central Coast motel. The government issued its statements of regret and commitments of $1 billion of support to those countries as would be expected. For days there was silence from the opposition leader who was expected to come out and give a similar statement endorsing the government's response as is convention in such circumstances. Instead he stayed inside his hotel unseen for days, before eventually making a churlish appearance and making a statement along the lines that the tsunami had nothing to do with him but if it made any difference to anyone he thought it was unfortunate. The statement would have embarrassed a socially dysfunctional 14 year old. given that it was given grudgingly on a matter of half a million deaths. He was intelligent, but hopelessly captive to his own anger and self absorption.
