"The attorney general said he could not "assure the courts and the prosecutors and the department that we're doing our work with integrity" if the executive branch appeared involved in DOJ decisionmaking.

Although I hope he was serious about it, there is a possibility it was said in agreement with Trump, to quieten public concerns about his support for Trump. Remember, this is a corrupt administration now, hardly anyone believe what they say.
